RDJ and Chris Hemsworth interview at D23

At today’s D23 (essentially Disney’s Comic-Con), I got to ask Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. a few questions about The Avengers before their presentation to the fans.  We talked about if they’d been enjoying their D23 experience, what footage are they showing the fans from The Avengers, and what’s it been like for them as tons of images and video have been leaking from the set and there is so much interest in the project.  Hit the jump for what they had to say.

Finally, I’m going to be posting a lot more video interviews from D23, so make sure to keep checking back.

Robert Downey Jr. To Produce Film About USS Indianapolis

When Robert Downey Jr. isn’t playing Iron Man or Sherlock Holmes, he’s producing films.
Downey Jr. and his wife Susan will co-produce a film about the USS Indianapolis, a ship that sank during World War II and left the survivors abandoned in shark-infested water for five days, where they were slowly eaten alive. The film will focus on a boy who looks up the event for a school project after hearing Quint’s retelling of it in Jaws, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The as-yet-untitled film will be written by Robert Schenkkan, who wrote for the HBO miniseries The Pacific and also penned the Michael Caine film The Quiet American.
There have been talks of bringing the tragedy, which occurred 60 years ago, to the screen before. Most notably, J.J. Abrams tried to make the film, but plans fell through.

RDJ talks a little about Iron Man 3 and Shane Black

The closer a film is to release, the more attention it garners. Right now, 'The Avengers' is hot. The film is shooting in Cleveland, Ohio, and set photos and videos have been pouring out on a daily basis for the most part. Two films that lead up to the upcoming superhero mash-up film from director, Joss Whedon are 'Iron Man,' and its sequel, 'Iron Man 2,' which were both directed by Jon Favreau. A third film is in the works, and it's scheduled to hit theaters about a year after 'The Avengers.'

Star of the series, Robert Downey Jr. -- who plays Tony Stark/Iron Man -- recently chatted a bit with the Los Angeles Times about Iron Man's next solo outing. With the script in the very early stages, Downey wasn't able to get very specific, but he did say:

"My sense of it is that we need to leave it all on the field — whatever that means in the end. You can pick several different points of departure for that."

Such vagueness is to be expected at this point in time. Downey did have a lot more to say about the director replacing Favreau this time around, Shane Black, however. The two have worked together before on Black's debut outing as a director, 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.' Of the director, he said:

"He’s more than the sum of his parts and he’s also kind of been a sleeper for a long time. We’re not talking much about [the script] right now because Shane is off writing and we talked before that and when we are talking again the talking is going to be over pretty quick [because we're on the same page]. It’s kind of like we’re fighting on the same side and at the same time we’re circling each other, so it’s all great. It should be great."

Time has a way of going by before you know it. The next time you will see Downey as Iron Man is on May 4, 2012 when the 'The Avengers' assemble in theaters. The following year on May 3, 2013, 'Iron Man 3' hits.

Samuel L. Jackson on Robert and other castmates on The Avengers

"We're all really good friends," he says, "It's kind of funny to stand around in a room and see everybody. Thor is standing there in his costume. Captain America. Sometime's he's dressed and sometimes he's not. Scarlett [Johansson] is there as Black Widow. Robert Downey is there. He very seldom has his Iron Man costume on when he's just hanging around with his buds. It's just amazing to look around the room and see all of those guys there and go, 'Okay. This is cool.'"
