Robert Downey Jr. To Produce Film About USS Indianapolis
Downey Jr. and his wife Susan will co-produce a film about the USS Indianapolis, a ship that sank during World War II and left the survivors abandoned in shark-infested water for five days, where they were slowly eaten alive. The film will focus on a boy who looks up the event for a school project after hearing Quint’s retelling of it in Jaws, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The as-yet-untitled film will be written by Robert Schenkkan, who wrote for the HBO miniseries The Pacific and also penned the Michael Caine film The Quiet American.
There have been talks of bringing the tragedy, which occurred 60 years ago, to the screen before. Most notably, J.J. Abrams tried to make the film, but plans fell through.
